Dr. Dawn and Dr. Payton spent an additional two years after four years of Chiropractic graduate school to be certified in the upper cervical spine. While there are hundreds of Chiropractors in San Diego, there are only two other Chiropractors in San Diego trained in this specialty. They provide care to Orthospinolgy, Nucca, and AO patients.
Upper Cervical Chiropractors utilize very specific approaches, techniques, methods and procedures to measure and 'adjust' displacements in the upper cervical vertebrae. Upper cervical chiropractic adjustments focus on displacements of the atlas with respect to the skull. There are quite a few approaches, which differ in analysis, and adjustment technique, but overwhelmingly they are gentle, very accurate and very effective.
People who have a confirmed subluxation of their atlas and who have received a professional and well-executed upper cervical adjustment to the atlas will testify to the adjustment's effectiveness with much vigor.
What is Upper Cervical Care?
Upper cervical care is related to the top two vertebrae: the atlas and the axis. Also known as the upper cervical spine, this area is extremely vulnerable to misalignments or subluxations because it is the most mobile segment of the spine. When this area misaligns there is a domino effect throughout the spine which causes subluxations all the way down (as shown in the below image) This chiropractic technique is rapidly growing because of its focus on the relationship between the first two bones in the neck and the brainstem. This is also why there is a plethora of research in the medical community specifically on upper cervical care. Upper Cervical care was also featured on the show “The Doctors” for its incredible changes seen in patients’ health around the world.
What happens when you have Subluxations in this area? Why should that matter?
The answer is simple. We know the brain controls every cell, organ, and system in the body through your nervous system. So, think of your brainstem as the control center. It works like a telephone line, controlling the information exchange between the brain and the body through thousands of tiny wires or nerve fibers. When you have a subluxation in the upper cervical spine, the information being sent from the brain is either interrupted or cut off completely from the body. This can cause many different symptoms such as acid reflux, asthma, fibromyalgia, headaches, neck pain, low back pain, visual (eye) disturbance, balance issues, learning disorders, fatigue, the list goes on.
How did I get a Subluxation?
There are many different causes of subluxation. Traumatic injuries, falls, auto accidents, sports, job injuries, chemical or emotional stress, poor posture, and even the birthing process. We stress our bodies every day sitting at computers, texting, and driving. All of these activities can cause subluxations.Just like getting your teeth cleaned for life or eating healthy for life, you should get checked for subluxations for life to maintain a healthy functioning nervous system.
How do you correct a Subluxation?
At Family First Chiropractic the doctors use the latest technologies, giving them the ability to measure the misalignment down to the millimeter. Then, through a series of precise adjustments, they correct the misalignment, allowing your brain and body to start communicating properly again which facilitates the healing process.
Adjustment vs. Manipulation
It's important to understand that there is a huge difference between 'manipulation' and 'adjustment'. Upper cervical chiropractors don't just grab your head and twist your neck hoping to unlock, some 'locked' vertebrae. Nor do they crack, crunch, rotate, or take your neck to its full range of motion and move it with high velocity in the other direction. This type of approach is what we refer to as manipulation.
Upper cervical chiropractors, on the other hand, are very deliberate their approach. They measure misalignments in upper cervical vertebrae with accuracy, utilizing precision X-rays to analyze such misalignments thoroughly in order to determine the best direction of the adjusting force to achieve the best result possible. This specific before and after measurement and correction is the hallmark of the upper cervical chiropractor and determines the difference between manipulation and adjustment.
